The Northern Ireland Department for Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) has announced new measures to tackle water pollution by improving regulation. Minister Andrew Muir declared on Tuesday his ambition to enhance the enforcement action of the Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA) by removing regulatory restrictions.

In May 2026, a new Fisheries and Water Environment Bill will also be put forward as part of Muir's plans to strengthen enforcement and hold water polluters accountable in the goal of reducing pollution. The bill will look to introduce a maximum fine of £50,000.

These measures come as Northern Ireland is seeing millions of tonnes of sewage being washed into its waterways annually, with many of its waters having less than satisfactory ecological status.

For more information on what plans are being put in place by DAERA, consult the original release.
