As reported by ITV News, numerous rivers and coastal areas in the UK will see increased monitoring of water quality as part of new plans released by the UK government to reduce pollution.

Plans aim to ensure UK waterways are free from pollutants, cleaning up rivers, lakes, and coasts to protect the public who want to use blue spaces.

Sites with improved water quality monitoring include the River Avon in Salisbury and the River Thames in London. A bathing spot will be created for swimmers in the Thames, with many blue spaces across the UK included in plans to increase the number of clean and safe swimming spots by improving water quality.

Increased monitoring across UK waterways is noteworthy news, aimed at ensuring pollution is controlled and water quality is enhanced.

However, with plans to expand the number of bathing spots, consideration should be taken to ensure these waterways and their natural ecosystems are protected from potentially increased use, with the utmost care taken to limit the impact of pollution and disturbance on wildlife and biodiversity.
